Course Offerings

A brief overview of some courses San Miguel offers.

THE SAN MIGUEL SCHOOL meets and exceeds all State of New Jersey and Diocese of Camden curriculum guidelines. Students are offered a comprehensive education that includes: mathematics, language arts, spelling, foreign language, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, and religion.

Students of THE SAN MIGUEL SCHOOL start the day together with breakfast followed by a plenary assembly period. This assembly begins with a student-led prayer, followed by a myriad of activities ranging from character formation to investigating a particular "theme of the month".

Once inside the classroom, the students will matriculate through their various classroom subject areas. With a lead teacher and a teacher’s aide (Lasallian and/or Jesuit Volunteers), students are put through their academic paces. Since there are no more than 15 students to a class, the teacher has great flexibility to complete not only whole classroom instruction, but individualized instruction with the necessary accommodations to meet each student’s individual needs.

Adult volunteers (many of whom are retired teachers) provide additional one-on-one support to the students. An IDEA Specialist and a teacher from Camden County Educational Services provide supplemental and compensatory education during the school week.

Classes do not end at 3.00pm. An hour and 45-minute homework session/tutoring session is held Tuesday through Thursdays. Students from La Salle University, West Philadelphia Catholic High School, and Paul VI High School provide one-on-one tutoring to the students needing review and enrichment.

A mandatory four week summer school program focusing on mathematics and reading and social/cultural activities (nature walks, ball games, canoeing, a day at the shore, gardening/horticulture, proper nutrition, etc.) round out the student’s academic year. In addition to math and reading enrichment, this time is used to assess the incoming students for proper placement for the upcoming academic year.
